I'm auditioning for Maria in West Side Story and I'm looking for a song to sing at the audition (also monologues if you know of any). Any suggestions? I'm a first soprano with a fairly big range.

Since Maria is a soprano there are some great songs to choose from
Falling in Love with Love (Boys from Syracuse)
I Could Have Danced All Night (My Fair Lady)
Till There Was You (The Music Man)
So in Love (Kiss Me Kate)
Hello Young Lovers (The King and I)
As long as he needs me (Oliver)
Out of My Dreams (Oklahoma)
The Sound Of Music (The Sound Of Music)
In My Own Little Corner (Cinderella)

You want to do something from classic broadway not anything new because its very hard to find a legit soprano song in todays musical repetoire. Also you are a Soprano not 1st Soprano that is for Choirs in music theatre either you are Soprano, Mezzo Soprano/Belt or Alto/Belt

I am auditioning for Laurie in Oklahoma when I am finished with doing Once Upon a Mattress, and I find "Green Finch and Linnet Bird" to be a great audition piece for a Soprano I. It really shows off the range.

Maria HAS to have the High-C comfortably, so you need to sing something that demonstrates strength and durability at the top of your range.

I would suggest singing:

"Green Finch and Linnet Bird" from Sweeney Todd
"I Could Have Danced All Night" from My Fair Lady
"How Could I Know" from The Secret Garden
"Think of Me" from Phantom of the Opera

These are just a few obvious ones. Just as important as your technical ability as a singer is your portrayal of innocence coming of age.

Break a leg!!

I would go with I am so pretty. That is the song that the Late Natalie Wood sang in West Side Story
or
You could sing The song How could I ever know from The Secret Garden.

Some Like You from Jekyll and Hyde is good because it shows lower and upper registers.

As far as monologues, the best one I know is from I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change called "The Dating Video of Rose Ritz". Good luck finding it though. Your best bet is to find a monologue book and read something from that. Do not read Shakespeare, everyone knows it and you'll never get it to match everyone's idea of it.

Good luck!

If you have to sing something from the show, you should sing some high lines from "Tonight" or you could sing the part of "Somewhere" at the end of the play which you would be able to act out and impress them with both your singing and acting.

Never sing a song from the musical you are auditioning for, unless its a selection from the musical director. Another good song would be One Boy from Bye Bye Bridie.

For Maria, Much More from the Fantasticks is really good because there are some similarities between the characters and its a good soprano piece.

For Tony, try Close Every Door from Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat or if you can do a standard, use Moonriver.

Someone said that you shouldn't use a song from the show and I partially agree, but sometimes if you can really really nail the song, it pays. I just got a role that way.

Never Never NEVER use a song from the actual play, unless they actually ask you to. It is really bad form, plus it makes them think of you for only the part of the person who sings the song, so you lessen your chances of getting another part if they pick someone else for the part you sang for.

My suggestion would have been either Think of Me from Phantom of the Opera or I Could Have Danced All Night from My Fair Lady, but those were already suggested.
